Notice to all SSAI members.
As a result of decisions made at the 2011 convention the Following information should be noted. All the resolutions that were discussed and approved by the delegates at this years convention will be forwarded to either the Saskatchewan Provincial Government, or if applicable, to the National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation for discussion at their convention later this year. The convention delegates unanimously choose 3 resolutions dealing with matters which they considered to be of prime importance and which will be taken directly to the Saskatchewan Government by the resolution committee. The items that the 3 resolutions dealt with can best be described briefly in this way:
The presence of seniors and community members in the make up of Regional Health Boards.
The acute problems that persists in rural areas with the lack of Doctors.
Also the high costs to low income seniors of optical and dental examinations.
In addition to those 3 resolutions it again was agreed by all the delegates that the resolution dealing with funding for senior centers would again be taken to the Government of Saskatchewan as a separate brief. It became known after the convention that the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism along with all its member organizations intend to be with us when we present that funding brief. Their support will hopefully make the Government realize how important this particular item is to SSAI members.
This decision was not taken lightly, rather it was taken to help the members of the government focus more intently on just a few of the matters that concern seniors in this province.
Len Fallows. President SSAI.
PREPARING RESOLUTIONS
One of the most important functions of SSAI is the acceptance
of resolutions for the annual convention from branches or clubs
so that briefs can be compiled and presented to the various government
departments and agencies for their consideration and action.
Resolutions should be written down in such a manner that clarifies
both the item of concern and the proposed resolution.
The term "Whereas" is the method used to outline your complaint
or concern and in order to clarify that item of concern there may be more
than one "Whereas."
.
The term "Therefore be it resolved" is meant to deal with the resolution
of the complaint or concern and there may be more than one
"Therefore be it resolved". As an example a resolution could possible read like this:-
WHEREAS: the 6.5 kilometer stretch of road from Saskatoon to highway ?
is very rough, and WHEREAS: in dry weather it is dusty and
presents a hazard to drivers, and WHEREAS: the cost of broken
windshields and headlights is costly to owners and insurance companies, and
WHEREAS: maintenance on the road appears to be non existent.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that SSAI approach the Saskatchewan
Government and ask them to pave this stretch of road, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of all correspondence and action relating to this resolution be forwarded to the MLA for this area.
* The resolution should indicate the name of the club, signature of president
and secretary and a contact phone number. A resolution from a branch
or club should have the support of a majority of its members.
Resolutions may also come from district and region meetings but they also
should be approved by a majority of those people entitled to vote.
The format will be the same but with the name of the district and region
plus co-ordinators or directors signatures. The executive board
may also forward resolutions to convention provided that it has the
approval of a majority of the executive board..Resolutions should
preferably be printed not written.
** Resolutions should be forwarded to SSAI by March 1st of the
convention year so that all resolutions can be forwarded to branches
or clubs prior to the convention date. All resolutions should be sent
to either the Secretary or President of SSAI.
